Swim the Fly by Don Calame
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan

Cindy and Lynn: We first wrote about Swim the Fly (Candlewick, April 2009) back in November at our original blog site, and you can read the complete comments here. But this funny book has done laps in our brains since then and we wanted to reprise our enthusiasm for it now that its pub date is approaching. As Lynn said at the time,

“I think it is extremely hard to write humor but this first novel makes it look easy. Fifteen-year-old Matt and his two buddies have a tradition of setting a summer goal. This year’s is to see a real-live naked girl. Add barbell disasters, laxative and fart jokes, a nudist colony and three bumbling buddies who steal your heart and you have a book tailor made for teen-age boys. There is lots of crude, snort-worthy humor here but there is also a sweetness to this story that will win over the most hard-hearted reader.”

Sharon Hancock and Jenny Chow

In January at a Candlewick Preview breakfast at the American Library Association Midwinter Meetings we learned that marketing people will do anything to sell books in this economy. While Karen Lotz tried to deliver a serious presentation about this book, Jenny Choy was sporting a swim cap and Sharon Hancock watched on through swim goggles. We captured the moment and share it with all of you now. We later heard that author Don Calame wore little but a swim cap, goggles, and Speedo while presenting the book at a luncheon, and we’re sorry to have missed that soiree! Not to be outdone by the publisher and author, however, we at Bookends present to you some thematic photos of our own, featuring three of our West Ottawa High School (Holland, MI) Varsity swimmers (Dakota McCaw, Mathias Bares and Max Olson) and Coach J.P. having fun in the pool reading Swim the Fly. The book is making the rounds with the team, who wrapped up their season last weekend at the Michigan High School State Swim Meet.

As Cindy noted back in November, Matt’s efforts to get in shape enough to just finish the 100 yard butterfly for his team will have your sides hurting as much as his–but yours will be from laughing. And (we) just love Gramps. Truly. Every boy needs a gramps like him.”

Thanks to Dakota, Mathias, Max and Coach J.P. for playing along, and to Val Bares for taking these great pictures for us.

I put this on my “to read” list when I read your original review. Your fun pictures have made me want to read it even more! :-)

  2. Don Calame Says:

Wow! Thanks, Cindy & Lynn. (and thanks for the awesome blurbs in the ARC) You’ve put a gigantic smile on this author’s face. Those pictures are fantastic!!! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the book.

Yours (in goggles, swim cap and Speedo)
    Don Calame

  3. Ed Spicer Says:

Great photos! Nice to see this group of young men reading. Thanks gentlemen!

  4. Susan Smith Says:

Great idea for theme pictures…would make a great READ poster…I too loved the book–maybe Candlewick needs to make a special paperback edition with a water resistant cover!

  5. Swim the Fly by Don Calame « Bib-Laura-graphy Says:

[...] an extra: Bookends has posted some very funny pictures of Swim the Fly and their local swim team. Possibly related [...]

  6. David Macinnis Gill Says:

The paperback should definitely be waterproof, even if you don’t take it into the pool. Swim the Fly is so laugh-out-loud-oops-did-I-just-horse-laugh funny, you’ll be spraying the pages. I kid you not. I see a lot of guy-to-guy chain reading in its future.

  7. Manica Says:

This article makes the book seem like a must have…I’m going to have to grab me a copy.

  8. Jenny Says:

I loved this book. It caused you to laugh untill your sides hurt. The voice was amazing! I laughed so hard that the rest of my class turned to look at me since I was reading after finishing a test in class early so the whole room was silent. I strongly recomend this book to all who want to, or are forced to read, and want something enjoyable. You don’t have to be a swimmer or a boy to like it. I loved it and I am neither.

  9. Lissy Says:

One word-HILARIOUS!! I love books that have a dorky teenage boy as the narrator, and I love it even more when they get the girl or do something great! One of my all time favorite books I have read so far this year and I really REALLY hope that it’s nominated!

  10. Kenny Says:

I love this funny book even though there was alot of nude stuff it just makes it even funnier. I can never find another book that puts all the stuff together like this one. It really does seem kinda nice with matt’s new girlfriend.

  11. Glenn Fox Says:

As a parent of a 13 year old boy, I would not recommend this book to any parent who is doing their best to raise a child free from the vulgar drivel of Don Calame, the author Swim the Fly.

  12. Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan Says:

Well – different opinions make the world go around. Thank you for taking time to let us know how you feel. I have to say that I respectfully disagree. I’d like nothing better than to have a lot more books like Swim the Fly that show not only the funny side of growing up but the sweet, honest and good side of teenage boys.–Lynn
