Chester’s Masterpiece with NO help from Melanie Watt
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan

47124227Lynn: It is spring break for us at Bookends and I thought I’d give Cindy some time off and put the focus group to work today. They got to choose a book to blog and I’m not surprised that Chester’s Masterpiece (Kids Can Press 2010) is making an appearance today.

Chester, whose ego matches his girth, has hidden Melanie Watt’s art supplies and is creating his own book. Armed with a red marker Chester spins a story about a hero called Supercat who is determined to save the world from the cheesy villain Dr. Meanmouse. Watt fights back with sticky notes, a pencil and suggestions about how to write a good story but Chester ignores her until his marker finally runs out of ink. Watt appears to regain control but as always Chester has the last word.

This is the third story featuring Chester and I will admit that I find Chester annoying. Perhaps it is the fact that the focus group adores these books and I have read them over and over and over and over and…well, you get the picture. Watt clearly knows her audience though and that is what counts!

I have promised to type just what the boys tell me although if I listened to Chester I’d be adding commentary.

Hayden and Mason: Our Nana is really crazy! Chester is not annoying. Chester is SO funny! These books are awesome. Chester is a really bad cat who takes over the books. This is the funniest one because Chester puts Melanie Watt’s art supplies in the litter box! Get this book and read it.

Hayden and Mason–thank you for filling in for me while I’m on vacation! It’s a good thing it is coming to an end or you might move me out and take over my byline! Will you loan me Chester’s Masterpiece so I can decide if you are right or your Nana? It sure sounds fun!–Cindy
