Top Ten Favorites
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy: We could post top ten lists for the next month and still not run out of ideas, but the 2011 publications have been coming in and we need to move on. Hey, Lynn, maybe we should post a list of the ten forthcoming books that we most want to read? My 2011 stack is growing quickly! I’m ahead of myself, though, today we are each posting a personal top ten favorite list. Some of these books may have been or could have been included on our top literary list yesterday, but we are building this list entirely on the books that we most enjoyed reading due to our personal taste in books. Here are mine (Sorry, Lynn, I seem to have 11 again and I still have lots of favorites but no room to include them unless we come up with another list idea):
Di Camillo, Kate and Alison McGhee. Bink & Gollie. Candlewick, 2010.
Gill, David Macinnis. Black Hole Sun. Harper/Greenwillow, 2010.
Glidwitz, Adam. A Tale Dark and Grimm. Penguin/Dial, 2010.
Hemphill, Stephanie. Wicked Girls: A Novel of the Salem Witch Trials. Harper/Balzer+Bray, 2010.
Millard, Glenda. Layla, Queen of Hearts. Farrar, 2010.
Nelson, Jandy. The Sky is Everywhere. Penguin/Dutton, 2010.
Ness, Patrick. Monsters of Men: Chaos Walking: Book Three. Candlewick, 2010.
Stroud, Jonathan. The Ring of Solomon. Hyperion, 2010.
Telgemeier, Jane. Smile. Graphix, 2010.
Turner, Megan Whalen. A Conspiracy of Kings. Harper/Greenwillow, 2010.
Winter, Jonah. Here Comes the Garbage Barge. Random/Schwartz & Wade, 2010.
Lynn: I’ve been doing so well at reining in my enthusiasm but I’ve fallen apart with my favorites list and can’t get below a baker’s dozen. The only way I’ve managed to get down to 13 is because our Focus Group’s picks are yet to come and I may tack on a comment or two there. Sorry – I’m hopeless. Anyway, here are my personal favorites for 2010.
Bacigalupi, Paolo. Ship Breaker. Little, Brown, 2010.
Bishop, Nic. Nic Bishop Lizards. Scholastic, 2010.
Gill, David Macinnis. Black Hole Sun. Harper/Greenwillow, 2010.
Marchetta, Melina. Finnikin of the Rock. Candlewick, 2010.
Montgomery, Sy. Kakapo Rescue: Saving the World’s Strangest Parrot. Houghton, 2010.
Nelson, Marilyn. Snook Alone. Candlewick, 2010.
Pratchett, Terry. I Shall Wear Midnight. Harper, 2010.
Reeve, Philip. Fever Crumb. Scholastic, 2010.
Stroud, Jonathan. The Ring of Solomon. Hyperion, 2010.
Turner, Megan Whalen. A Conspiracy of Kings. Harper/Greenwillow, 2010.
Westerfeld, Scott. Behemoth. S&S/Simon Pulse, 2010.
Wood, Maryrose. The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: The Mysterious Howling. Harper/Balzer + Bray, 2010.
Yancey, Rick. Curse of the Wendigo. S&S, 2010.

My students and I have decided that Curse of the Wendigo is WAY creepy! They are liking it, but we’re a little afraid of the third book!
