71770085Lynn: There is an irritating new rule about new book reserves at my public library.  Well, that is another story but because of that it sometimes it takes me a while to get my hands on a book and that is the case with Mindblind (Marshall Cavendish 2010)  I wanted to read this since I a) saw the stunning cover in a review and b) read Michael Cart’s review.  It has taken me till now to be able to check it out but it was worth the wait!

14-year-old Nathaniel Clark may have an IQ of 182 but he knows he can’t qualify as a genius until he uses his talent to make a contribution to the world.  Never mind that he has already graduated from high school, taught himself Chinese, is supremely gifted at mathematics and plays a mean keyboard.  Nathaniel also has Asperger Syndrome and sometimes retreating into his internal world is seductively more appealing than dealing with the outside world.  Nathaniel has people though – some really special friends and a terrific mother – who have a glimpse of just what goes on in Nathaniel’s mind. When something awful happens, Nathaniel needs them all to help him find his way between his worlds.

Jennifer Roy has given us a wonderful book, funny, smart, tender and eye-opening.  To read one page is to be pulled into Nathaniel’s world completely.  Nathaniel’s unique voice is as endearing as it is compelling.  This is a book I simply could not put down and I read it in a gulp.  Perhaps we can never fully see through another person’s eyes or know what goes on in someone else’s mind but in Mindblind I think we come very close.

Yes, yes, I know you are all anxious to be reading the new 2011′s but make sure you don’t miss this extraordinary book!  Nathaniel is someone you will be happy you met.
