Poetry Month begins with….a stack?

Cindy and Lynn: 100 Scope Notes has thrown down the gauntlet and asked for five line book spine poems for National Poetry Month. We had so much fun with this last year that we couldn’t resist trying it again. With Spring Break starting today as well for our district, we were in the mood for a vacation poem. Yes, there are six books in our stack, but the top one is the title! 
You know us, we have a hard time sticking to limits. And, since this is poetry month, we restricted ourselves to the poetry section for our books with the exception of Polly Horvath’s title book. Thanks for the challenge, Travis, we’re eager to see what your participating poets come up with. Those readers who tried this activity with students since last year–we’d love to hear how it went. Oh, and mark your calendar. Apparently there is a movement afoot to encourage everyone to carry a poem in their pocket on April 14th. Awesome! Good time to whip up a bookmark with a poem on it to hand out to library patrons or students so they are at the ready.

The format of this book is, as the cover implies, poems on a pad that can be removed and given away. The collection is delightful with many old favorites and many that should become new friends. I recommend especially Sonia Sanchez’s “To P.J.”
