Reading is a Treat
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan

Cindy: With two libraries to manage, I don’t have as much time as I used to for displays and bulletin boards and yet have twice as many to design! My favorites are ones that use student participation in some manner, both because it generates ownership and interest for them and because it saves ME time! This current display, which is timely with Halloween trick or treating just around the corner (how did it get to be October already?) uses paintings from an art teacher who had her students create paintings with the slogan “Reading is a Treat” on each one. Featuring candy, ice cream, baked goods and even fruit the display is bright and cheery and is accompanied by books with cover art featuring similar treats. The students are devouring these like kids in a candy store. (Sorry. I couldn’t resist). So, if you find yourself strapped for time (and who doesn’t?) Enlist some of your readers to help you. If you don’t have an art teacher handy, just provide some art supplies and a theme and set your kids loose. Involving them in display building can be SWEET.
Lynn: I told Cindy that I thought readers would eat up this idea
(Remember, I speak as someone who is severely bulletin board challenged!)

Great idea! I’ve been looking for new Halloween bulletin board themes for my two school libraries, and this one makes the cut!

“sweet” idea….it’s always a “treat” to see what you are up to!
