The Cube Book by Jessica Bruin

Lynn: Here is a book that has to be one of the most innovative designs we’ve seen in quite a while.  When the focus group and I opened this, I thought at first we had been sent a puzzle – and it is.  The “pieces” can be fitted together into a flat thick floor puzzle.  But it is much more than that as we discovered to our delight.  The thick puzzle pieces also fit together to form a large cube.  But wait – there is even more!  Each puzzle piece is actually a small board book with a picture and information on 4 related endangered animals such as big cats, or jungle birds.  The photographic images of The Cube Book (Tundra 2011) are bright and colorful and the simple text explains where the animal lives and what it eats.

The big boys of the focus group were fascinated by the book and we are eager to further test it on the youngest member when he visits us during the holidays.  At 16 months he will test the book’s sturdiness and attention-holding appeal but we are already pretty sure we have a winner.

Here’s one of the focus group checking out the cube.

Cindy: Lynn gets to have all the fun. Legos…Playmobile Pirate ships…and now board books that double as puzzles and building blocks. It’s so quiet at my house…wait…that’s not a bad thing. Thank you guys for testing these out for us, and now I’ll pour another cup of coffee and go back to my novel…

Don’t miss other Nonfiction Monday posts today at Geo Librarian.
