Bunnies on Ice

Cindy: Before the last of the skating ice melts, be sure to skate on over to your local library or bookstore to get your hands on Bunnies on Ice (Roaring Brook/Neal Porter 2013). Bunny comes from an ice skating family of bunnies but she proclaims herself to be a champion. One of the things a champion must do is “wait for the conditions to be just right.” So a charming take on the passage of seasons unfolds with, as Johanna Wright describes her work, cozy and safe scenes. How can you not love a book that has bunnies sipping hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows in the fireplace? This is a family that plays together (swimming in the pond in summer), works together (planting a garden and raking leaves in spring and fall, and creating art and cooking towering stacks of pancakes in the winter…and finally skating together at the frozen pond.

Lynn:  I love this incredibly self-assured little bunny who knows many things about being a skating expert including that it is really important to have “an excellent support team.”  With that team cheering her on, she is happy to spin and leap…and fall, knowing she can get up and try again tomorrow.  I too loved Wright’s lovely textured illustrations with their simple lines and luminous colors.  The figures are evocative and expressive and I also loved the tiny homey details in each scene.  This makes a truly cozy lap-book for a winter day!  Give it a try before the snow melts – and be sure to bring it out next year when the snowflakes fall.

Cindy: Lynn and I have been so enchanted by Wright’s artwork on textured canvases that I finally went to search out her website for more information and found this video of how she creates her art.
