More SUPER ALA Conference Adventures
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy: It’s not every day as a librarian that you get to feel like a superhero! I can’t believe we forgot to include our caped adventure at the Scholastic celebration for Dav Pilkey and the forthcoming publication of Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers in our previous conference post. This photo really [...]

Bookends in New Orleans
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy: What is it about dieting that makes you see tempting food everywhere? New Orleans is probably one of the worst places to go while trying to avoid sweets and carbs but when even the books start making you salivate things are bad! Lynn and I are wrestling with post-ALA-Conference stupor this morning but wanted [...]

Conference Glow
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy and Lynn: We are home from the wonderful ALA Midwinter Meetings and despite our return very late last night to a winter storm and snowy roads we are still experiencing a post-conference glow. It was a terrific conference! We got to see and hear some amazing speakers, our meetings were interesting and stimulating and [...]

Cindy & Lynn’s Best Books of 2010
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy: We attended our state school library conference (Michigan Association for Media in Education) this week. Lynn and I presented our annual list of our favorite books of the year. We provided two hour-long booktalk presentations to over 150 school librarians. One session was devoted to fiction and the other featured nonfiction, graphic novels and [...]

Reward Piles: or, M&Ms in Book Form
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy and Lynn: Pavlov would have loved us. We’re behavior mod kind of gals. We’re assigned reading by Booklist and by each other for the blog and somehow, even if it’s a book you wanted to read, once someone assigns it to you a bit of the shine disappears. So, enter the beauty of the [...]

Librarians Make Terrible Pets
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy and Lynn: We’re home from ALA’s 2010 Annual Conference laden with books and new ideas and are ready to return you to our regularly scheduled blog posts tomorrow. The exhibit halls are always fun for us, and usually worth a good photo op. A few years ago we captured Lynn posing with Iron Man, [...]

Kids in a Candy Store
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy and Lynn: #ALA10. Bookends may be slow to blog during the next few hectic days of ALA’s 2010 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. It’s not for lack of material or Wi-Fi access, but time. We are soaking up every bit of information (and FUN!) that we can and by the time we drop into [...]

BBYA Changes Update
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy and Lynn: At the ALA Midwinter Meetings in Boston the YALSA Board voted unanimously to adopt the changes to the Best Books for Young Adults Committee that eliminate adult books, graphic novels, and nonfiction from the BBYA committee. YALSA has posted an FAQ page to help answer some of the questions that we and [...]

Lugging Luggage
Posted by: Cindy Dobrez and Lynn Rutan
Cindy and Lynn: We’re just home from the ALA Midwinter Meetings in Boston and will be back to posting about book titles soon. We picked up many fabulous Spring 2010 advance reader copies and as soon as we get some sleep and unpack we’ll begin prioritizing our reading. Our editors reminded Cindy that her priorities [...]
